A Community Approach to Commercial Waste: How Business Associations can Transform Commercial Waste into a Community Resource

The Strathcona BIA has leveraged external funding and resources to launch a Zero Waste Challenge program for its members as well as an innovative Resource Park. By developing community partnerships and piloting new ideas, we're helping our businesses divert more than a tonne of waste each month. We're also creating local green jobs in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, providing free materials to local artists, and creating valuable agricultural products.

Join us for a luncheon and optional walking tour of our Resource Park on September 20 and learn about the programs we've developed. You'll hear from SBIA staff, members, and sponsors on why these programs are so important.

The Urban Tree Nursery is a joint initiative of the newly founded Hastings Crossing BIA and the Strathcona BIA, with additional involvement from UBC Department of Forestry, the City, and Mission Possible Enterprises. We will be installing a minimum of 12 tree planters along East Hastings, starting at Gore and working our way west and east to at least Carrall and Princess Streets.

Saplings will grow for three to five years in the planters, and will then be auctioned off and transported to their permanent homes. Funds from the auctions will go toward community initiatives and maintenance of this program. Residents will also have opportunities to sponsor individual trees; we will recognize sponsors with plaques on the planters.
